The Connection Between Limb Loss & Vascular Conditions
An estimated 2 million people in the U.S. are living with limb loss – and 500 or so lose a limb every day. These numbers are expected to double by 2050 due to the ever-increasing rates of diabetes and vascular conditions like peripheral arterial disease (PAD).
If you think about it, there’s a clear connection among these health issues. Having high blood sugar levels (diabetes) often leads to PAD, where the buildup of fatty material inside blood vessel walls restricts blood flow. And when that happens, it’s usually the extremities that suffer.
A lack of adequate oxygen and blood to the limbs can cause tissue death (gangrene). Amputation of the toes, feet, and lower legs may become necessary in order to avoid the spread of gangrene and to save lives.
At Panhandle Vascular Surgical Specialists, we want to save lives – but we want to save limbs, too.
The Limb Salvage Institute at PVSS focuses on preventing as many amputations as possible. Our board-certified, fellowship-trained vascular surgeons can perform complex limb salvage procedures designed to both alleviate your pain and help you avoid losing a limb.
